Bavarian Question

Something I've been meaning to ask since my trip to the North Store...

90% of the Bavarian Service Grades had been defaced--the "US Carbine" mark had been purposefully destroyed on the front of the receiver. It looked a lot like a piece of white tape had been laid over it from a distance until you got close enough to see it was just ground down uniformly. This was true on maybe eight of the twelve odd Bavarians (all of which were IBM by the way). I've never noticed it in Gunbroker Bavarian pics and it wasn't true for all of Bavarians either so...WTF?

M1 Carbines in Austria: Oddities

Thanks Denny! This is almost exactly what I saw:

"Receiver: Silver Solder on Receiver Ring
A few of the U.S. M1 Carbines used by Austria have a distinctive silver solder pattern on the receiver ring. Some of these have a slotted rear sight platform. These were carbines used by a group of the Bavaria Rural Police and Border Guard that had a V notch rear sight silver soldered to the receiver ring. The Austrians removed these non-GI rear sights and replaced the rear sight with an adjustable GI sight, leaving the pattern of the V notch rear sight.

If a carbine has evidence that a V notch rear sight was once present, the Bavaria agency marking has usually been removed (see next item). "

In the case of these Carbines either the removal or the initial installation of the sight was a little overzealous and the "US Carbine" was gone completely, but if you look closely at the photos in that section you can see that spot that looks like silver tape on the ring.
