WWII TEL STG C NO 32 MK II Sniper Scope for Enfield
WWII TEL STG C NO 32 MK II Sniper Scope for Enfield
R.E.L. CANADA 1945 COS.1650A
As found on ebay: eBay.ca: WWII TEL STG C NO 32 MK II Sniper Scope for Enfield (item 130147632318 end time 05-Sep-07 20:52:17 EDT)
An interesting thing about this scope is it's serial number. If we go to the bible "Without Warning" by Clive Law, on page 54, Clive gives his opinion that the mk2 scopes ranged up to serial 650C. This one is a bit higher than that (685C). Not sure where Clive comes up with that number, since the REL scopes were cumalative in serial numbers until the Mk3 scope went into production. If you look at the quantities produced at the top of the page, they total up to 694, so it may be likely that higher numbers than the one shown on ebay exist. These production numbers only go to Sept of 45, so it may go higher yet.
The other thing this photo shows us is that there is a misprint on the bottom of the page in the book. The ordnance stores number given for a Cdn mk2 scope is COS1560A, and this photo shows that number to be COS1650A.
So get out your pencils and make the corrections.
I would love to get this scope to go on my Cdn marked/ Brit produced sniper rifle, but alas, I cancelled my account in a fit of rebellion over the new ebay firearms parts policy, and as well, I suspect it will go fairly high.
My money says that it will sell for around $1700. Anyone want to start a pool?

That would help explain the recorded discrepency between the # of produced scopes & rifles.
I'm starting to dislike this particular forum though....

It's going to go high regardless, but I'd prefer to weed out those just looking for a scope.
Or a good time

Well, checked my books and I owned Mk. II REL 685 at one time and it was a scope only. I still have one a few numbers under it: Mk. II, and the stores number is: COS 1650A. In fact, that scope (685) was the reason we noticed that the numbers repeated on each Mk. of the REL scope. Not sequential as was claimed at the time. REL was a very INTERESTING company...too bad most of the records were destroyed. I've found more in the UK
on REL than in Canada
. Someday the story will be written.

Repeated with each mk scope, or just repeated once it hit the mk3 scopes?
Clive was of the opinion that mk1 ran from 1C to 300C (with a few unexplained scopes in the 400s) , 1A ran from 300C to 470C, and mk2 scopes ran from 475 to 650. Then the mk3 scopes started again from 1C to 342C (or so).
Can you clarify if your numbers disagree with this? I doubt I will ever see enough REL scopes to make a correlation on the numbers, so I have to trust those who have.

Hi All,
Its an intressing post to read, but I have two things that I think are an mis interpretaion of the facts (at least thats my personal interpretation):
First off all the COS of an Mk II is 1650. Just like thier British
counterparts.
Second, the s/n range for the Mk1a scope started below the #300. I Own an Mk 1a with the serial number 264-C. The scope body hasn't been scrubed or renumberd.
So I agree that REL was an interresting company with lots of un explained "habits".
