Winchester gas cylinder?
Wondering if anybody knows what would be the correct gas cylinder for a 1,275,XXX Winchester: narrow base or wide base? Also, any other correct info on the various other parts is appreciated. Thanks.

Narrow,...
Scott Duff's red book has one in the 1.269 range which should be about the same.
Lots going on in this range to switch things over but it could be a GHD (possibly even a large box which are really tough though I have seen several sell loose), probably a long pinion but it could have been short, with either grooved or checkered knobs, could have some A marked parts and/or some CM, rear handguard should have no clearance cut and should have a grooved clip, front sight seal should still be intact but you are getting close to that ending.
This is a really interesting era as there was so much going on, but I would recomend getting Scott's red book - it is worth every penny and is the best for this kind of info. And if you call the number at the link (below the pic) Scott will usually be the one who actually picks up the phone ... (grin);

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the wide base Winchester gas cylinders more rare? The way I understand it the narrow was used during most of the production.

Someone else on another forum thought it should be a narrow base as well. I've got Scott Duff's book "The M1
Garand of World War II, A Guide for the Collector" from 1987, but it doesn't go into a whole lot of detail with the Winchesters.

Don,
GCA
Journal Winter, 2008 published a benchmark WRA 1289121 in full color. Rifle was new and never issed. It's close to yours and it should be your guide. Gas cylinder was narrow base and with a cover over front sight screw.
