Somebody else using my name?

Aside from the pain in the arse of having to log in every time I access ths forum, I just recieved the message that I have tried to log in several times today! I HAVE NOT! I only logged in ONCE today!

I'm not sure why you'd want to go to all the trouble of logging in every time, when all you have to do once any time you log in, is to click the checkbox that says "Remember Me?" and guess what, the site will remember you.

So, here's what you do ...

Type in both of the boxes your name in one and your password in the other. Check the small square box titled "Remember Me?" so you don't have to log in any more, because it sets a "cookie" on your own personal computer. Finally, click the button titled "Log in". Unless you clear the "cookies" (or they expire) stored on your computer under the web browser you're using, you should never have to do this again and so you'll be logged in every time you come to the site. By the way, ALL sites such as Gunnutz, Gunboards, Jouster etc, all of whom use vBulletin software operate exactly the same way.

As far as the messages you received about someone trying to log into your account, they are security warnings that some stranger is indeed trying to login into the site using your name. They are obviously failing because they don't know your password, which is why you're seeing the warnings. It's important to note that for security reasons, even the Site Administrator doesn't know what your password is that you registered with. All I see when I view your password on your user account is a set of asterisks *****

I got the same message in an e-mail when you changed over to the new format.
Somehow the new setup would not accept saved passwords and I had to log in again manually and then tell it to remember the log in information as stated above.

"Someone has tried to log into your account on Military Surplus Collectors Forums with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes." with my ISP address.

It accepts saved passwords just fine, but a new "cookie" has to be stored on your local computer so future logins don't have to be manually performed, which contains encrypted information specific to logging into the new site. It's for your own protection...

Again, at the risk of sounding repetitive, that message means someone, perhaps the actual member themselves, tried to login more than 5 times entering an incorrect password. So, to protect the member's account, it locks out further attempts for 15 minutes while simultaneous sending an email to the proper registered email address of the member who's account was being affected.

Nothing mysterious going on here and it's a standard feature of vBulletin software that has existed for at least 5 years that I can recall.
