M1A1 Stock Mark?? Early S/N !

With much respect and thanks to Garandrew's posting about M1A1's, I've a question on a mark on one I once owned.... Early one..... 143XX. Bbl mkd 12-42.
The mark is shown below circled in grey.

Anyone know the meaning of this??

Its an inspection mark, on early Inlands, on my 208K too..


Not on my M1A1 though..or my Inland/SG 700K

Ive talked to long time CC guys, they assure me its ab early Inland proof, U.S. indeed, on several early, up to 250K SN..Andy

Thanks Drew and Inland 44.... I doubt very seriously that this carbine has ever been out of US hands. As you can tell from the wear, this one is REAL. Been there, and done that. The provenance was excellent. In my opinion, and others who looked at it, NOTHING had ever been changed on this one... It was brought home in a duffle by an officer whose family kept it in a vault out here in --- Prarie Dog Town... An old trooper who had been carried a long tough trail....

Uh Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now we have another stamp like the "ducks foot/eagle head"

Follow the link that painter777 posted. (#15) There is a pic of a "shark fin" looking stamp in the same location about halfway down that thread. The duck foot has been spotted in that location also.

Here is another thread about another similar stamping an 1911's and Garands.
Does anyone recognize this mark????

Here's some I thought might be interesting... I guess this is standard stuff to some of you guys, but looking at good examples can always be a learning experience. There is no way to duplicate the wear on this one. No fakes or "restorations" here.
