Could be almost anything from rack number, storage or inventory number, probably never know for sure.

Another poster on another forum has D54 on his Colt 1911 slide. Thought it might be an inspector's stam,p from RIA./

Unlikely that it has anything to do with the pistol rebuild as that wasn't typical. Usually just Arsenal initials, ie RIA and sometimes inspector initials, ie FK for Frank Krack.
