No4 Mk1* Charge Lug repair
First thing, I am new to this forum so hello to all.
A few years ago a work colleague of mine was moving to Canada
and sold me he’s Lee Enfield’s, a DP No4 Mk1, No1 Mk3 Lithgow
(with a cut-down stock) and a No4 Mk1* Steven Savage). I sold the DP No4 and the No1, but I like the Savage so kept it, put it in the gun cupboard and forgot about it.
At my gun club they started up a military service shoot for WW2 service rifles, so dragged the Savage out of the cupboard and joined in the fun. I found that the rifle was very accurate and won a few shoots with it, but one thing I found was that in the rifles past some Muppet had cut off the charger lugs (god knows why). This was very frustrating and not good for the mad minute at all !

What I started with, as you can see I had already started the other side before I got the camera out.

First I cut and shaped a piece of steel to repair the lug.

Then Vee’d out both sides ready for welding.

Very carefully I welded the piece into place.

After careful welding and shaping and before final finishing and bluing, at this point the grooves for the charger clips are finished off with a tungsten bit in a Dremel tool.

The final test after a good clean up and bluing (Outers cold blue).

It works Yippee
I hope someone will find this interesting and that if you have a Lee Enfield that some Muppet has had a go at, don’t give up on it.
