xxx's in serial #'s

I notice in pictures and writtings that some serial #'s are xed out or some of the #er is blacked out. example 1293xxx. Why is this done? oh I have # xxx9xxx can anyone tell me when this NPM was made? just kiddxxx.

If someone leaves out the last two or three numbers in their serial number, you can still match that to a maker, and probable build date. Which is what they are usually asking.

Why do they do it? To hide the exact gun they have I guess. I don't get it either.

As for your xxx9xxx, you will never see them leave off any front end numbers. Can't help at all that way.

Generally, a combination of ignorance, paranoia, & mindless copying of other's delusions.

Some folks are afraid that the government will be able to track them & seize their gun someday. (Like the US Government can actually do a good job of tracking anything!)

Others are afraid that someone will file a police report & claim that THEY are the legitimate owner. (This has never, ever, happened.)

And, some are afraid that their gun is stolen & the last owner will try to recover it. (This is a valid reason. It has happened, & the gun goes back to the legal owner without compensation. But, if it were me, I'd gladly return a gun to the rightful owner; I don't want any stolen property.)

I doubt very much many records of all the 6 million guns produced remain. They would most likely be in a warehouse and all paper files. So many got destroyed or lost in the war or are at the bottom of the English Channel near Normandy Beach. I want to know how you are able to track the maker and production date after all these years? Who recorded the information and certified it is valid? I am a newbie and a curious one at that. Thanks, BriWac

I'm in full agreement with Neal M! It is a totaly STUPID thing to do and is done for equaly STUPID reasons!!! Of course if they didn't have a STUPID reason they wouldn't have a reason at all!!!
