I tripped over this again today and I just enjoyed rereading the whole thread. I still love looking at the pictures of those racks of new/perfect/dry late rifles - wow, what a treat.

It was a great time that I am so glad I got a chance to participate in - all the great people we got to meet having a great time with all their endless energy. A big thanks to everyone along the way who helped make it so.

Bodyman, I believe I bought one of the HRAs you guys spoke of and handled. It's a 5.66 mill I bought from another CMP member about four months back. When I received it it had a SA Stockset on it. But, it was otherwise, I believe, correct. Had an IHC safety and a IHC Gas-screw. Looked to be unfired and this was confirmed when I tore it down for cleaning. There was absolutely no wear anywhere on this rifle. Has a 5-55 HRA barrel that measures TE<1, ME<1. I did put it in one of Deans' semi-fancy Walnut stocksets. Slight correction- I looked again today while filling out a Data sheet on the CMP forum, it's a HRA stamped safety, not IHC.

That is why I prefaced it the way I did; not kicking a dead dog ...

But the volunteer program is up and running and apparently Orest needs some help again so anyone can go get themselves down there now - it may be a little different each time but it is always a good time no matter what. And in spite of criticism, I know we helped Orest and the CMP.

I think what even those critics may have learned now is that there is always going to be criticism when you try to do anything. You can try all you want to head it off or minimize it, but there are just always going to be people who are never happy with your efforts. I am always one for introspection and examining how I can do things better, but I saw the organization change about a thousand percent for the good during the years we were there together and in spite of everything, we still had some of the very same problems with ciriticism when I left (if not more) - there were just those who were hellbent on making waves. It is probably one of the most disappointing things I found when I was a Director of the GCA - one of the only disappointments, and it just seems to be intractible. Some folks are honestly trying to help and it needs to get its fair attention, but for the repeatedly aggressive stuff it seems all you can do is shrug your shoulders and say 'oh well'.

Sweet 5.6, Dave - what a honey. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of those that were just a part or two away from being perfect. Funny that from what I can gather, the CMP seems to be making folks buy one of each from the racks to get the parts to make them perfect themselves when they get home - brilliant and a pretty good deal a far as I can see (grin).

At work there were guys who got a bigger Christmas bonus than they deserved and were thrilled with it -- until they found out that somebody else got more. Then they were angry. There are always dopes like that.

IMHO, if the folks in that "other club" are still mad, upset and/or holding a grudge against the GCA simply because they couldn't/didn't participate in last October's CMP activity, they need to find a new hobby.

Life's way too short to let something like that run it--or in this case--ruin it.

OTOH, I personally hope they are able to get a chance to visit the CMP and enjoy themselves, even if they go there as individual volunteers instead of a group/club activity.

I was unable to go because I could only make the weekend and it was deemed unfair to take a spot from someone who could go all 4 days and I was okay with that but broken hearted just the same. do i understand i could volunteer to i don't know, sort or clean or help grade rifles. my vacation fell through for november and i would maybe be available how do i get info? do i just call the CMP?

A friend of mine and his son spent an entire week at the CMP a couple of months ago--right after the volunteer program was reinstated. They did a variety of things and had a great time!

I would try calling the CMP first, but if that didn't work, just send an email to Orest (not a message on the CMP forums).
