How the heck do you install this without distorting it?

brute force.... actually there is a old timers tool, they called it 'reversable pliers' and i've seen them installed using this tool years ago but i don't know the corrrect name or even if they still make this very old tool anymore. it sorta reminded me of something that would have been made for use by a blacksmith but thats just my opinion.

I use an old pair of snap ring pliers. Normally the jaws will open when the handles are squeezed. Just make sure the pliers are stout enough as the sight is strong. Hope this helps, & Merry Christmas. Smoke

Split ring pliers are what I used. It takes a bit of force, but the hood made it alright on mine.

I used snap ring pliers. I went on in a snap.

How the heck do you install this without distorting it?

I fitted one yesterday. Whilst i wouldn't recommend this method to a collector rifle, i fitted it to my old roughy Israeli everyday shooter. I got a huge screw driver ( 10mm wide ) and twisted it sideways halfway along the slot of the hood forcing it to open the 10mm wide & then slid the now opened hood onto the sight from the bolt end, removed the screwdriver & then tapped it on the rest of the way with the screw drivers plastic handle. Clearly this can scratch the hood on the inside of the slot but that bit is hidden. No way would i do this to my collector k98 though, i have googled that & read how people use a circlip type plier to open it. I wasnt too concerned as i bought the hood on ebay for $10 anyway. That is the hardest spring steel ive encountered for a long time.
