Bipod 303 & 7.62
As the subject of the difference in bipod sleeves between 303 and 7.62 came up in another thread (which I can't find) and I happen to be assembling some bipods I have taken a pic to show.

303 sleeve on left (with sling eye) and 7.62 with shroud (sling eye machined off to accept shroud) on right

Good pic KG. The 7.62mm L4 bipod sleeve was authorised for use on the last of the .303" Bren bipods from April '78 onwards if the need arose under one of those WSE (when stocks exhausted) instructions.
The actual bipod sleeve was a VERY hard material. Thanks for showing that KG

With regards to Kev's coments on the thread about Bipod sleeves on MKI Bipods for the 7.62mm L4 variants.
there was I recall, & small flurry of posts as to nomencleture of the 'shroud' used to discribe this componant.
I have checked the relevant E.M.E.R again, & just to add a little controversy, (Lol!) it's actually termed a 'Cowl' !
As Armourers, we refered to the Whole sleeve & cowl assembly as a Bipod Sleeve.

Yes, the sleeve and cowl was only ever a complete assembly to us on the floor. I realised that the L4 sleeve and cowls were simply re-used and modified Bren sleeves because you'd often see the old JI, MA and CRD markings on them. You'd often see the same original markings on the L4 barrel gas block, where they'd been taken off the old Mk2 and 3 barrels and re-used (and lightened a bit more if taken off the Mk2 barrels I should add)
You can see in KG's picture that the big beefy sling loop has been machined off the old .303" sleeve and replaced with the cowl on the LO4 sleeve. The big sling loop stopped the gun from tipping too far to the left when it was leant over but while the thin steel cowl was supposed to do the same, it didn't do a very good job....................
