Webley & Scott auto ammo

OK, since I started asking everyone I know about converstion of 45 ACP to .455 auto there does not seem to be any consensus on the subject. Everything from "just down load the 45 ACP and go" which didn't sound too promising since the standard extractor will not engage the 45 ACP, to the big book on cartridge conversion which started off "get 45 rimmed Colt, turn down the rim to .500. Cut a new extractor groove etc." which involves equipment I do not have and can't justify buying being retired and on Social Security.
Does anyone reading this have real life experience in doing this? Looking forward to a whole lot of knowledgeable responses for which I will be very grateful.

What type of pistol? If the 1911 platform, Change barrel and extractor out to .45 and go from there. If in a Webley auto...Good luck....

He's right, you can shoot it in one caliber but keep the rest for the show. I knew a man that had a 1911 in .455 and the barrel was a sewer pipe. Didn't want to change over to a new barrel so couldn't use it. This would get you in firing shape.

I wasn't clear, sorry ,it is a 1912 (1913 dated) Webley & Scott semi-auto (N). The barrel and the rest of it is very good showing mostly holster wear. I hate like hell to have another wall hanger to keep my Chassepot and a couple of others company so I want to find some way to avoid this but thanks for your interest.

From what I can cypher out in my books, you will need the cartridges designed for the gun. You can't make .45 work at all. Everything's different. Ammo WILL be available if only in limited amounts from ammo collector sources. I don't know if anyone has made this ammo in 50 years. The dies will be available but you will have to special order. Bullets would be cast lead and sized to .455 I guess. I have my thoughts on what loads to start with but I guess I'll keep that part to myself. The book states 200 gr lead with 6.2 gr of Unique giving 775 fps. That's still pretty snappy. Even in a .45 auto.
