Not shown is the scope can which had the scope serial number properly painted on the lid but inside of the lid was a different rifle number. That and the unusual style of stamp used to renumber the butt makes me feel like it was a garage job. The scope mount also has 3 different s/n's, not unusual but does not help either.

Don't know if you are still following this thread....(it's a year old now) but the L42A1 I just picked up is marked in much the same way as the one referenced here

This rifle has been in the possession of a friend since being purchased in Reno back in the early 1990's. Fortunately for me, I didn't pay near 6 grand for it, although it was almost twice as much as what my Enforcer cost. (Got a smokin' deal on the Enforcer).

A friend gave me a heads up on this old thread.

Is your rifle s/n the same as the one taped into the inside of the can? The part that makes me a little uneasy is the rifle s/n inside the can is stamped into the mount and then canceled. If the rifle was rescoped and the butt and mount marked as so, then the can should of been too as it is not a tough job to remove a taped in s/n and replace it.

Second, I am not easy with the font of the new scope s/n on the butt. It is the same as the first one in the string but the numbers are a bit too large and modern in my opinion. Now this is a 1970-80's rifle so it could be correct, but it makes me question it.

Remember, if you like it then you are good to go. If you plan on shooting it and it shoots straight then you have no problems!
