No5 forends
G'day guys,
Just wondering if many un-issued No5 forends ever appear on the market. I have seen the butts and occansionally a hand guard but no forends. I am after a good to excellent one if anyone has one they want to part with.
Myles

Yes. There was a good post about making one out of No.4 wood by Peter Laidler
. It covered making of the 'plug' to fill the channel in the shortened foreend. There was some suggestion by Peter that it was not worth replacing the metal cap as it allowed the wood underneath to go rotten.

Check with Brian at BDL
LTD. A few years ago I got one from him. He may get one in from time to time.

`Tis not that difficult to make out of a No. 4 Mk 1. At present am making a No. 5 Mk 2 (with the Mk. 2 trigger bracket Peter sent me). I like the metal nose cap but they´re not all that easy to find. So made my own out of the leftover No. 4 metal cap and a metal inlay. Doesn´t look too bad. The only difficult bit is getting rid if the last vestiges of the cutout for the old No. 4 front band. I´ve also got an original (and new) works No. 5 fore-end, cut down from new, surplus No. 4 Mk. 1 wood. For my tastes, it´s too short.

For anyone interested, here's one I did a year or so ago. The forend came out just about perfect, so I suppose I could do another one, but I'll hold out a while as the real McCoy occasionally turns up. Also for anyone considering doing one, you can get a very good result out of a quite beat up forend as you taper the whole thing to a new profile, in elevation and plan so the only surface timber still on the surface after conversion is the part of the forend aft of the receiver ring (or where it would be).

Yeah you can't beat Tom's step by step project. Like Tom also, just wondering if un-issued ones do appear.

If PL could not get them in Malaya from the system that supplied them what chance is there today. Hens teeth, rocking horse poo, flying pigs or pink panthers maybe seen first. Start a business suppling them tbonesmith
, make replicas out of that exploding coachwood. Actually i would use west Australian
white gum (wando)

I got a No 4 Mk 2 fore-end here in Germany
for my .308 No 5 Mk 2 (yes, I know ...) project ... and then BDL
sent me an even nicer walnut for-end. So I chopped them both down and got to work with oiled emery paper and pumice dust. I´ll cut the fore-end band when I put the action in to get a perfect fit between the hand guard and the fore-end. Made the fore-end caps out of the leftover No. 4 end caps.
