my dad just gave me his dads arisaka. i have a few questions.
it looks like a 38. but i had it taken to a gunsmith and he said the caliber is 7.9jap. so i was wondering if anyone could help me identify it and if it is a 7.9jap could anyone help me find ammo for it.
also it does not have the original stock on it and if i cant find ammo for it i was going to just restore it and keep handing it down threw the the family lines so could you guys help me find parts?
thanks im new to all these guns i just turned 18 and im getting into guns

Hi tylerbryant. Welcome to our forums.

You should probably post your questions on the Japanese rifle forum to get the best help. There's some very knowledgeable experts on Japanese rifles there.
Take some photos, especially markings, etc and post them there to give them something to work with and they'll be able to help you out.

We really need some photos to be 100% certain, but if your gunsmith has said its a '7.9 Jap', then its probably going to be a 7.7x58mm Japanese. Factory ammo is made by Hornady and Norma. If you plan on shooting it a lot, you will be well served to get into reloading.

I have been collectingcartridges for over 50 years now and still haven't found a 7.9 Jap. I HAVE found 3 different 7.7 Japanese carridges..... but no 7.9.

Type 38 and Type 99 Arisakas were very similar. Japanese Rifle forum is the right place.

If it is a 6.5 or 7.7 Sportsmansguide seems to have the best price on the Hornaday. If it has been sporterized but the barrel has not ben modified I have seen quite a few m38 and m99 original stocks on E-bay if you would like to reconfigure it to its original state. as always have it checked by a gunsmith before you try to fire it. Keep it in the family and find out as much as you can from your dad about how your grandfather obtained it. You will never regret it.

Some time back, Japanese rifles that had been converted to other cartridges were imported out of mainland China. The most numerous convertion was communist era conversions of the Type 38 carbine to 7.62x39mm. but there were also WWII and earlier conversions of the type 38 long rifle to 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser).

Pictures of the rifle, and receiver markings will help.
