I restore things besides guns...

Hello All,

Over the last several months I have been restoring a toy of my youth...a 1954 Murray Supersonic Jet Pedal Car. It has been restored to as close to original as possible. I am missing one peice however, the shifter that should go on the control panel. If anyone has one or knows someone who does i would appriciate if you would let me know. I did all work in my garage in my spare time over the last few months. The starting condition was pretty pitiful to start with however I sadly did not take before pictures. Total I have more than 100 hours of work into this old girl. The paint is Rust-Olieum that I bought at my local Menards. The graphics were ordered over the internet. The chain guard(red at bottom) I fabricated and the tires I bought at Ace Hardware in the mower section. Also pictured is another mid 50's pedal car that my father restored with my brother. It is the Happy Time Commet also by Murray. Let me know what you think.

Looking in the background there you either you have a lot of children, or a lot of projects backed up.

Ever watch American Restoration, guy works in Las Vegas. Maybe he can help you with that shifter.

They actually restored one recently that the pawnstars bought. Original shifters are impossible to find almost. And by the way I dont have any kids, as I am the kid

In the 50's there used to be a childs pedal car like this made in England. I think it was made to give work to pressed steel workers and the car was based upon a post war AUSTIN (Austin Somerset I believe.....). Does anyone in the UK remember them? I believe that they're highly collectable now

Yup, I had a pale green Austin J4 (?). Heavy as hell for a toddler to pedal on gravel or grass. Real spark-plugs in the pretend engine, large battery for the lights. Have still got the scar on the back of my leg from sliding off the bonnet over the 'flying A' emblem. Later models had it removed.
I think they were built at the Austin factory, and most seem to have ended up on fairground carousels. I couldn't afford one now. Typical British industry to make a retro car. At that age I think I would have preferred a supersonic jet car

Beautiful restoration! I greatly admire people who can do such things and do them as well as you have done. I was just thinking about kids - I'd be very hesitant to turn that over to a child.
