Weird M1 sights
I recently picked up a clean looking Underwood M1
. The only thing that I can't figure out is the history of this notch type sight, does anyone know anything about them??
Sorry for the crappy picture quality.

I think those were done for the Germans. The Bavarian carbines. They used to be around but seem to have dried up.

I know many M1
Carbines in post war Europe were converted to notch sights. Bavarian, maybe.

I've got one just like it. Definately Bavarian. Many that came back to the U.S. had those sights removed. Too bad, because now they are rare and in high demand.

So, what did they do, just weld up the area where the rear sight dovetail is?

I believe they pushed a block in that filled the dovetail and machined it flat or flat then they put grooves in it to cut the glare.

Yes, the dovetail is still there but filled with a milled down plate. The replacement rear sight is soldered on. Sometimes the receiver ring was lightly ground to remove the parkerizing so the solder would stick.
