I suspect the bodies are dead Japanese and not "fallen comrades". The body in the left bottom corner of the picture appears to have its leg wrapped to the knee with puttees.

I would tend to agree that they're Japs. The first thing that's done after battle is removal of dead friendly troops so they don't get trod on. The enemy? Well, what about the enemy? We'll get to em...

My vote is that they are definitely Japanese troops.
