Saw a good one today!
Ran into a mate who said have a look at these... He produced two rifles... one a Snider Enfield MkIII Long Rifle in pretty good condition, Queensland Gov marked and appears complete. The second was a 1904 Enfield Mk1... no upgrades, also in pretty good condition. It is missing the rear handguard and the charger guide, and has had the barrel changed in service.. 1910 dated barrel remarked with the rack number which also appears on the butt, the receiver ring above the serial number and the marking disc. The beauty of this rifle is that it has a nicely marked disc in the butt...
He said they came to him from his elderly uncle and they had belonged to his great grandfather. He has gone home to look up the old gent's military service history... Here's what we were excited about (apology for quality, phone pic only...)

yes, Light Horse marked and genuine. I don't have any more pics at the moment, the pic on my phone being all I could get. I will try to see him tomorrow for more... I did invite him to log on here and do his learning where we could appreciate his rifle... fingers crossed. He seems keen, I gave him a lend of four or five books to research both his rifles.

1902 BSA MLE MK I*, ALH marked on the butt, VIC marked on receiver and barrel
1904 LSA SMLE MK I EY, ALH marked on the butt, wire wrapped forward stock only

Not just any light horse unit. But 12 Australia Light Horse.
Think charge of Beersheba, the desert campaigns, very interesting.

Me thinks the no1 with the wire on it is a later addittion, and the other is probably before all the light horse were officially part of the AIF before 1914 atleast. They did have a version of carbine that was trialled as well but these are a rareity and i dont have pics for that, interesting if any one dose have pics for that.
