How did they alter the older No1, MkI*** sights to match the MkVII amunition?

Just curious, did they grind down the sight base or just add a higher base front sight?

They ground down the base ramp. They also replaced the 'V' notch with a 'U' notched backsight and replaced the barleycorn foresight with a blade.

Thanks jrhead75. I knew if anyone would know, you would. Was just curious. Seems like all they would of had to do was change the height of the front sight blade base to change the difference, Ray

It was also a question of re-contouring the ramp to compensate for the trajectory of the flatter shooting round.

I have two Mark I*** SMLEs.

On one, the 1904 LSA, they simply replaced the whole rear-sight assembly with a Mark III type.

On the other, a 1907 Enfield Mark I* converted to I*** by the Navy, they left the original rear sight as much original as they could, just reground the ramp. The bed still is screwed directly onto the barrel, those lovely water-buffalo-horn buttons still are there and so is the original wind-adjustment assembly, merely with the V-notch reprofiled to make a U-notch.

When it comes to Mark I*** rifles, it seems that almost anything went, depending on who did the conversion.

Boy you arn't just a kidding. It appears there are all different kinds of alterations on these rifles.

As far as rear sights go, I've seen original MkI sights and MkIII sights still with windage adj and MkIII* no windage adj sights on these rifles. Apparently anything goes.

Speaking of which, A square 10, I notice what appears to be a screw hole for the barrel securing screw in the bottom of your stock just behind the band. My MkI forearm has that screw under the band. Did they alter the position of that screw on some MkI stocks as your stock doesn't appear to be a MkIII stock, Ray

This Enfield COND 11* still has the barleycorn front sight and the barrel is not marked SC or HV. This is a Mark 1* action body.

Looks like a MkIII forend as there doesn't appear to be a outer band retaining pin fitted though the forend in front of band, this was omitted from production late 1909.
