No.5 mk1 parts interchange
Does anybody know of a good reference to inter-changeability of parts between the No. 4 rifles and No. 5 carbine? I have a No.5 JC and would like to have some spares on hand, specifically some action parts like springs and pins and firing pins and what not.

There's a big difference between interchangeability and suitability, but I guess that's a different discussion. There are a number of things that would "fit". The bolts and their attached parts all interchange, as does the safety. The Mk.I backsight would fit from a No. 4, but would be marked for 1,200 yards not 800. The trigger guards would also swap out. I guess the last question would be how much do you intend to shoot your No. 5? My guess is that if it's in reasonable shape, all the parts you ask about will outlive you and the next owner...

I haven't actually fired it myself yet. Its in remarkably good shape with the numbers matching on everything, bolt body, receiver, barrel, magazine, and fore-end (I could not find a number anywhere on the but-stock). The only exception is the integral flash hider/cone which has had the bayonet lug ground off and the bunny ears removed from it. I don't think I will ever have problems with it, I would just like to have a few incidentals on hand for unforeseen circumstances. I may possibly take it hunting this fall

Puit your hands into your pockets and get the two little Skennerton
'ready-reckoner' type books. They detail everythinh you want to know. And cheap too. Available by return from Brian at BDL Ltd. He will also have the parts you need. But you won't need deep pockets for the books or parts
