I ran into a Marine vet who served in Korea on a fishing trip in northern Arkansas last week. 5' 3" cheerful little Italian
fellow from Chicago who shared a story with me about his DI not liking Italians and trying to drum him out. He was sick and the DI sent him to the infirmary and suggested he drop and start over with the next class. He took some asprin and returned the next day to find a he had a new DI who happened be Italian. He said his last two weeks of boot camp were a breeze. I truly enjoy meeting these old vets. God Bless them all!

Vet Stories
I find they are very willing to talk about funny stories like that or the time Joe dropped his helmet in the **** barrel, but they almost never volunteer the combat stories. You would be tempted to think the war was just a lot of laughs. My boss told me the story of his column's getting strafed by a 109, he jumped into the ring mount of a Deuce's .50 and fired back. It was very heroic, but he quickly added that he literally $hit his pants to counter the image of bravery.
Real men measure once and cut.

I too have found vets tend to be more willing to share the funny stories. Probably an instictual reaction to protect the mind from the bad memories. Vietnam vet friend of mine has shared the story of his R&R wedding in Hawaii. He and his new bride befriended another couple while there and shared some good times without discussing there postings/rank etc... Upon arrival back in Vietnam the ran into one another at the airbase and my friend (who was with an artillary battalion) discovered his new friend was a chopper pilot. His new friend the pilot asked him where he was headed. The pilot came back in a few minutes and told him to grab his gear. He flew my friend back to his unit. It so happened the chopper was the one tha shuttled some high ranking officer so when my friends CO saw it coming he spiffed up and ran to the LZ to meet the chopper. My friend the grunt steeped off to greet his CO who was shaking his head but did welcome him back. He never saw the pilot again but will always remember the kind act.
