I may be completely off on this, but I wonder if that rear sight isn't original. Do you know if that is a late manufacture date for them? For some reason I have this thought that they started using the adjustables towards the end of production. But I could be all wet. So, wait for someone else to say. But yeah, High wood stock and no bayo lug. Push button safety. That could be original. Too bad the stock is so dinged up.

Parts breakdown:
Bolt, FP, and extractor=SG
Slide, Trigger Housing=SG
Hammer(in the white) and trigger=SG
sear=unmarked
Recoil plate, early type=unmarked
rear sight=IR CO with part #
Front sight=unmarked, has correct milled out area for SG used sights
stock and handguard=RSG marked, sling well numbers and letters, green stamp inside stock and the CC and boxed SG
Barrel is Saginaw with large P
Safety=unmarked type 3
mag catch type2a marked SG
early band with wide swivel, 3welds, both unmarked
As for the rear sight, I just dont think its original, maybe on a later 5.8 with low wood and the later bands I would think its plausible.

It seems weird that someone would leave it all stock except for the rear sight. Then again, if they wanted to shoot it, it may have been viable to just change that. That is certainly possible. If so, they'd be kicking themselves if they knew how much a flip sight goes for now. Or maybe they separated the flipsight and sold the rifle and the sight and made out better.
Anyways.. I'm kind of rambling. Nice find for sure!

I have read that late in production SG did use an adj rear sight.
Nice find.

Many carbines were upgraded in the field with the adj sight during WW2, I have seen more than a few totally original carbines with nothing changed except for the rear sight. Its all pretty much guesswork though, this sight could have been put on this carbine last week by the previous owner, by a GI in 1944 during, or by the a Saginaw employee at the plant. My best guess is that it was a field upgrade though.
