Saginaw S'G' or S.G.?
I obtained a barrelled receiver about 5 years ago, the receiver is marked "Saginaw SG" , no periods and no prime marks. S/N is 1832003, and I suspect it is one of those made at the Grand Rapids plant (after IP takeover), but shipped to the Saginaw plant for integration into their manufacturing. Ruth's book indicates these receivers were marked Saginaw S'G'.
I'm a member of the CC, joined in Jan 2004, and my Newletters don't go back far enough to check on reports of COM Saginaws in my S/N range. (NL246-1, 317-1,2, 122-7, 271-4)
It might have had an Underwood barrel either 2-43 or 4-43 on it when i got it.
Can anyone give me some hard data, as I would like to try and build this back into what it was, S'G' or S.G.?
Thanks

Same thing with mine. I asked the person selling it if the manufacturer was S.G. or S'G'? He said it didn't have either marking - that it was just marked Saginaw SG. I wasn't sure until after I got it home and did some studying. On the ones I've bought, the dealers just listed them as "Saginaw" when doing the paper work. - Bob

Bob,
The one I pictured above also had a J stamped on the left side of the lower receiver, just like yours.

Thanks gentlemen. Are both of these full of S'G' parts + proper stock?
I looked at my receiver again under magnification, and it really is very hard to tell whether there's a prime mark on either the S or G. It has a narrow tang, but the locator hole is square, not rounded like yours. Also has "J" stamped on the left side.
I also have S'G' 3224844, and the prime marks are clear, not bold, but easy to see. Interesting that the font of either the "SAGINAW S'G' " and the S/N is not the same as the earlier one 1832003.???
Think it took a little time for Grand Rapids to get this ' ' going?

The one I pictured has most parts marked IP or S'G' - the safety is unmarked. The stock is RSG in the slingwell with faint S'G' and CC on the right side. Oh, just remembered, the front band and swivel are marked U and UP respectively. - Bob

Mine is a mix of S'G' with a few IP parts.
The rear flip sight on mine is a reproduction.
The seller thought so also.
But even if I could find a Real S'G' flip, I'm not sure if I'd dare try to remove the repro.
The way they peened over the outer edges of the dovetails on the right, scares me away from trying to remove it.
My stock is a RSG with the boxed S'G' and CC, but both look to have been traced over.
Not sure if it was a bored GI, Hunter or someone trying to enhance the markings, but it's a mess.
Either way, it's the stock it came in and the one I'll keep it in.
Cheers,

In reality S'G' was up and running before S.G. as they had the parts already made by IP on hand and ready to go.

Yes, that's why S'G' was sending receivers to SG in the early S/N block. Question is how does one know if an early S'G' receiver ( and maybe Underwood barrel) was used in SG assembled carbine?

I don't think you would find an Underwood barrel on an S.G. made carbine that early. It sounds more and more like it is an S'G' made carbine.
Charlie, why do you think your rear sight is fake? And what the heck have you covered that poor S'G' in? Can it even breathe? Your not trying to preserve it for the next 100 years are you?
