Gun Auction of "Bubbas"
My local gun auction, after skipping a month, is back with a major yawn tomorrow. Highlights include a fairly good condition Japanese
Type I that had it's stock cut off and someone's name stamped into the receiver. A Carcano 38 carbine that has been polished to an inch of it's life, blued, stock sanded much smaller than the butt plate and varnished. A nice Westinghouse 91/30 that has all the original US made parts on it with a cut down stock, missing fore end and an extended and welded bolt handle that looks unbelievably bad.
I'm sitting this one out.

I ran out of things to do this morning so stopped in at the auction for about 20 minutes to read the paper and see what sold for what. Only rifle of the above three that sold in that period was the Carcano. I looked it over again to see if it were salvageable in any way and considering the stock was shattered, I decided no. It had one semi repaired crack which ran from the front of the receiver, straight back through the grip of the butt stock to about 5 inches of the butt plate, top and bottom. A second crack began at the rear of the magazine and ran the same depth toward the butt plate. A third ran about 4 inches long into the butt stock. I have no idea what may have caused them other than perhaps being stepped on or swung against something. The metal had been polished poorly and irregularly on the receiver and barrel.
It sold for $120. I just can't figure these people out sometimes. There were three guys involved with this over $100 and since the bore was also rusty, it wasn't even fit for shooting or parts.

To bad I can't bring that Type 1 into Canada
for a decent price. The brokerage fees are killers. I could sure use the bolt or even the bolt body from that tinkered rifle.
The Type 1 bolt is identical to a regular Carcano but the ejector is in the center, rather than off to one side and the bolt face is slightly larger as well to accept the 6.5x50 case head.
I have a regular Carcano bolt to modify but a real one would be much more appreciated.
Any Canadians reading this that have a spare Type 1 Japanese
Carcano bolt that needs a rifle to mate up to????

I didn't see what the Type I went for. I had thought about that one for parts but I hate doing that and would end up trying to find a stock for it along with the other missing items which would put it over what it's worth. It would have made a decent parts rifle.
You could watch ebay for a Type I bolt. They turn up occasionally. Not sure if that would cause you problems in Canada
without the rest of the rifle.
