HELP - No4 Mk1 micrometre sight
Hi,
My rifle is a No4 Mk1* with 300/600y battle rear sights.
It is accurate enough for bigger targets but I have acquired a micrometre rear sight for a No4 Mk1.
It arrived today but only has markings for 25, 50 and 100 yards.
I was expecting a lot more marks than this! Is it the case that this has not been fitted to a rifle before, and I need to sight in greater distances?
Picture attached below.

Yes, that would explain marks only out to 100y.
I think I have been sent the wrong part.
Another question; I assume no adjustment will be needed if I get the right part, as the adjustment is at the front sight? If the rifle is sighted in on th 300/600y battle sight, it should not need to be re-sighted with a correct ladder sight?
Many thanks,
Glenn

1. Plus the "H" for "Harmonised". That setting was used for shooting at "Landscape Targets". One aimed at the landscape target but the shot would hit a plain target fitted above it. (So as to save the expensive colour printed landscape target.)
2. Yes. Clearly. Although a No.8 sight,a a collectors item in is own right, is probably much rarer than that for a No.4.
3. You would need to zero the rifle by means of moving/substituting the foresight element.

Depending on what you want to spend, you may find the PH4 sight more to your liking. It has the full range of elevation adjustment, but with micrometer adjustable windage as well, and the option of using various screw-in eyepieces. It also folds flat like the issue MkI sight. Just checked online and prices for these seem to have more than doubled since I last checked!

Hi. I've just joined the forum and have a small, but varied, collection of military and sporting rifles and pistols, with a particular interest in French
breechloading arms.
However, I notice that Sika Slayer is enquiring about his "No 4" rearsight. Quite clearly it's from a single shot '50's Enfield No 8 .22 training rifle. I used one during my National Service and they shoot extremely well. The sights are, as you can see, from 25 - 100. The "H" designation at the top is for "harmonisation".
What this means is that when the rifle is fired at a landscape target the shot strikes about four foot higher than where it's aimed at on to a sheet of white paper. The purpose of this is so that the landscape target doesn't get shot to pieces! A length of wire, with a pointer on the end, is laid over the shot hole and the pointer shows where the strike is on the landscape target below.
So, Sika Slayer, you'll have to search again for the correct No.4 rearsight. There are two basic types, one with a micrometer adjustment, the other with a slide adjustment, the former being the better one. Both are marked to 1300 yards.
Good hunting!

They are for the no.5. The no.4 sights go to 1300 yards.
