Neighbor's find ShtLE MK1***
Hey Folks,
Long time no post, but I thought I would try again as my neighbor brought over one of his father's rifles the other day. He prepped me by saying it was an Enfield but he did not know what it was. It turned out to be a rifle I could not immediately identify so I did a bit of research. It looks to be a partial MK1***. Made 1906 at Enfield. I will get some photos when I can and post. The rifle has the original bolt attached charger half. It is missing the front, upper hand guard, nose cap (and all screws), butt plate, mag cut off and magazine. The rear upper hand guard has one of the pair of clamps broken off but does stay on the rifle affirmatively. It retains volley sights but the front sight is missing the ball on the pointer end. The rear leaf sight is of the "adjustable" type and has really cool Bakelite looking inlays in the adjustment knobs! There is no "stacking swivel" on the front of course as the nose cap is missing. My initial question is does anyone know of a place where I can obtain the missing parts. I looked at the "usual" places and found nothing but newer parts such as variation 2 nose caps etc. He bought a hand guard and nose cap but they are of a much later vintage and are not correct on this rifle. He is on vacation for 2 weeks but I promise I will post pictures when he returns as it is a very neat and in my experience seldom seen example of an Enfield. Thanks for the hits on where to find proper restoration parts.

Nice find!!,
There a s pic of a customised, restored one on the top of enfield resource, they areNo1 enfields, the precursor to the more common no1 ml3, and quite desireable. Nosecaps can be had at Springfield Sporters and show on trade me too, the wood can be had at Stuart NZ
front page notice board at enfieldresource, or via EFD in the UK
.

The upper handguard can be adapted from the later No.1 Mk.III if you can carefully inlet the recess for the inner band. It happens to be directly under the outer band, so the wood gets rather thin at that area!

RJW, a Mk1 SMLE is not a No1.
