If it doesn't exist on the internet, does it exist? (Hotpoint Model 204EK104 Refurb)
After a mysterious accidental (?) unplugging of our old deep freeze, it seemed a good time to clean it out, kill the rust, repaint and replace the lid gasket. All was going well until the gasket replacement. With it's rounded corners, the new style gaskets just aren't quite right. But after many hours of fruitless searching on the "interwebs", I guess that's whats going to be used. But this poor old tank gets no mention anywhere on the net that I can find. So here's a tiny tribute to something that seems to have fallen through the cracks.

This freezer is probably older than I, but it is still an excellent unit.
After unloading it there were frozen spots for three days following with the power off!
No telling how long it sat unplugged. Not much actually thawed, though- it was the condensation that fell on the floor that was the tip off that something was amiss.

My old one lasted many years and when I bought a new one they warned me that it wouldn't be a shade of the old one. By the way...here's something Hotpoint made on a limited basis. Cost's more that ten freezers...

Yep , they last a long time . I now have my parents 1940s / 50s International Harvester chest freezer in storage . I'm on my third freezer in 25 years . When it dies I'll replace it with the cornbinder.

This seems to be true of so many products from freezers to automobiles. Even if repairable the cost of replacement parts will discourage the handiest of handy men to replace an otherwise useful item.
The old phrase "they do not make them like they used to" if frustratingly true. Tried a Chinese bearing lately? When is the last time you saw a TV repair shop?
I just relized I have become my father. Does that happen to everyone when you turn 50?

Just wish he had hung in long enough for me to tell him so.

If available, outrageously priced parts would still be preferable to the horrors of many new appliances. Found an old Sunbeam toaster that's about as old as the freezer. Tested it and it still seems to work. It was doing my toast in childhood. It's a little rough around the edges but it's outlasted 4-5 other toasters in known length of active use.

Industrial art! The old appliances had visual appeal as well as staying power.
Well worth th effort to save.

There is a comedian in the UK
who stated " you know when your getting older and more like your Dad, you start to save sticks to stir paint"

As an update, the old freezer is back in operation in hopes of an infusion of fresh deer meat. Not altogether happy with the front internal freeboard trim piece repair- the plastic is quite brittle and finally I just sawed it in half lengthwise. Metal tape now covers the gap and isolates the insulation. Quite surprising how quickly it got cold again using only a 1/5 hp compressor.
