I believe Fulton Armory used to offer .270 M1
barrels and rifles many years ago, but not now. The tricky part is to use the correct gas port diameter, likely smaller than that of the .30-'06 due to the higher SAAMI pressure of the .270 and the slower powders generally used therein. But then a vented gas plug could be used to negate any error. I wonder whether there would be any fireworks when the inevitable happens, that is, someone loads a clip full of .30-'06 into the .270 Garand and gives the op rod a goose.

Nothing would happen. The rod would start forward and then fetch up with the big bullet lodged firmly against the shoulder of the 27 cal case. Your bolt would be 1/4 inch back I'll bet. Maybe more. There's no way it could work. Not even close.
Now 308...that could close on 308...
