I had two Savage No4s with the same markings, both were FTRd to No4 Mk2 (No4 Mk1/3) but neither of the action bodies were marked as such, both were Suncorited.

The mark you have on the receiver ring is likely not Indonesian, since the rifles bearing it do not show any of the other Indonesian markings. Some people say the W-in-a-star is a Weedon mark---and maybe it is. The last time I checked, there has been no definitive explanation for this mark.

The W in a star is the UK
examiners mark for wartime small arms bought into and examined at ROF Woolwich. There was a thread about it here some time ago. Found on some Thompson guns and US Colt and SW revolvers

Are these the Woolwich marks or are they Weedon?
They are on a No4 Mk1/3 FTRd in 1953

Colt marked with Woolwich inspection mark, pictures
Attached are photos of a Colt Official Police with the Woolwich inspection marking Peter referenced.
The initial subject marking is not Indonesian and I can't comment if it is a Woolwich marking.
I am satisfied that the mark I show is a Woolwich marking based on research done by a member at the Pattern Room where He found a lislting of the various markings Woolwich used in inspection of artillery.

You're right Paul and my mistake....... The W in a CROWN is Woolwich and not in a star. There would be no reason for a No4 rifle to go to Woolwich unless it went to the REME workshop there as opposed to the main Woolwich arsenal

Attachment 37983And here was I just posting about such a star..! Anyone recognize this star stamp from a No4 MkI receiver ring?
Looking at it with a glass I believe I can see the three points of the "W" just poking up past the edge of the crown stamp.
The rifle is a MkI and remained so when it had its "(F)FTR"
