Aluminum cased carbine ammo?
I picked up a mixed lot of .30 the other day and mixed in were these (I believe) aluminum cased rounds. I would assume that for a light round like .30 carbine it would be the natural war time expedient, but 3/5 are 56 dated, and 1 seems to be an action proving round. Just thought I'd share because I haven't seen any like this before. My apologies if this has been addressed already.
3 are LC 56
1 is EC 43
inert round is WRA 43

Not aluminum cased ammo. It's steel cased and was used a couple of times by the military. During WW2 it was made and stored for emergency use as they felt at the time there may have been a brass shortage coming. Later it was made as an experimental development trying to over come a few problems with steel cased ammo. It seems the problems were never over come so production of it was dropped. Many millions of rounds of steel cased ammo were made and most of it was given away to those countries that we gave carbines to. Some was used state side for training but it was never used in combat.

EC Evansville Chrysler
Where was the other Chrysler plant located?
I ran across a mixed bag of .30 last night.
Seen that many of the cases were lighter (more steel looking) in color when compared to normal brass.
Found most of the Shiney ones were LC, with dates from 52 to early 70's.
Red sealed primers.
I'll pull the bullets as I'm sure the primers will be Corrosive Berdan.
I'll try to post a few pics later.
Here's a handy look at the difference on the case rims;

There was no corrosive US carbine ammo, or Berdan. Although I cannot comment on the LC 52 china imitation stuff. I could use a few display rounds of steel case if you find any Charlie

Hi Curt,
Maybe my reply was mis-leading...
Trying to say that the China made .30 cal has/had the corrosive Berdan primers in their cartridges. The 2 flash holes.
I'm pretty bad for getting Boxer / Berdan primers mixed up.
Memory trick: 1 hole GOOD, 2 holes BAD.
4-5~ years ago I had 2 full boxes of steel cased EC. They had been shot but had been placed back in original boxes. Don't recall the year stamps on the heads, but know they were WWII and the batches were 1 year apart, ~ 43 then 44 (IIRC).
Traded, sold or gave them to someone who lived near one of the old plants. He wanted them for use in their local history museum.
Thinking back..... Probably longer than 4-5 years. Don't think I'd had my Tutorial by Harlan on how to use Photobucket and post on forums yet. As I can not find any pictures of the steel case I'm speaking of.
I do have at least 2-3 more 5 gal buckets of spent brass to look over.
If I find steel, they are yours.
Will be looking at your new IBM with coffee in the morning.
Been looking forward to seeing it, since you sent me the phone pics.
Congrats Buddy ! It's been a great year for you.
BTW, Loved the wedding pictures, that gal....... an obvious Keeper

Thanks IBM received today! Photobucket pics soon!!! When I was a kid my dad had 2 50 cal ammo cans full of loose steel case carbine ammo. We used to take a can with us when we went to a friends farm I was in 3rd grade last time I saw those cans or fired dads carbines. That is how I caught this disease. At some point we had hard times when I was young and Dad moved the carbines and steel case ammo down the road. I didn't find out until later on going to the farm with 4-10 as a kid not nearly as much fun after having carbines
