I'm no model 12 expert but that is a good looking gun. Pure conjecture but I bought a Ithaca m37 that had a very similar mark it turned out to be a dept of corrections surplus gun. The number was a rack number. That's a great looking model 12 how much did she set you back?

Military guns have martial markings. I'm with the theory of prison service or law enforcement because of the rack number.

It was a little more than some of the modern riot type shotguns on the market today, but they have no history, and I don't like the black plastic furniture.

The bore looks like the day it was made. The finish is thin on the muzzel(rack wear)and the mid section near the serial from being hand carried. It goes well with my 1918 Black Army Colt.

The lack of US Gov't. Property markings make me think the same. Either law enforcement or possibly plant defense?

Do the swivel mounts strike anyone as a bit unusual? Certainly aren't recent, though.

Look like they may be old Winchester hook-type sling swivels . Hard to tell.

One of my Dealer friends who is somewhat of a Winchester Xpert said that the sling swivels were indeed the old Winchester type. I guess he was correct, cause he wanted to trade me out of them.

I have one like yours within 1000 on the serial number.but it has no swivels........really nice early Winchester riot guns made when most were going to the military......also have one made just B4 or early WW2 that has the same old style rear swivel stud but has the front swivel on the barrel band ..like most of that era....
