Belgium Contract FN-49

This is a Belgium Contract Crown over B/ABL/1952 receiver marked FN-49 chambered in .30-06. They are rare; even rarer are the ones with unscrubbed receivers. Most have had the Crown and other markings removed from the stock! Found it locally.








I will strip it down after dinner and take some detailed photos - no markings on the stock whatsoever; looks to be refinished; mighty pretty wood though.

Nice cwo4 .... Very nice..... I remember 25 years a go when many around in 7x57, advertised in Century Arms catalogue around $ 149.00 !!! I should have purchased one at the time!!! ....maybe one day I get lucky and came across one at good price....!!

I realize this is an old post. I recently acquired a copy of FN -49 The Last Elegant Old World Military Rifle by Wayne Johnson. I bought the book because I had a FN- 49 literally fall into my lap. In looking over you photos and using Johnson’s book I think what you have is an AFN (selective fire) that was converted to SA only when Century arms imported 1,651 AFN into
Canada in 1975 that they had converted to SA. Your rifle appears to be a late variant based on the recoil stock bolt, full scope dove tail on the left receiver. The cut out in the stock for the trigger guard appears to be for the AFN trigger group. They allowed additional room for the selector switch. FN only made 4000 SAFNs for the Belgium contract. With the upper serial
Number being around 4000. Belgium bought a little over 87,000 FN all in selective fire except for the 4000 early variants in SA. This is way cool glad you got it.

Since my last post. I have exchanged emails and photos with Mr.
Johnson. Mr. Johnson has confirmed that I indeed do have an early variant probably one of the first 4000 SAFNs purchased by Belgium the SN on mine is 2xxx which is in the correct range for an early Belgium contract.
