New leather treatment?
While looking on Ebay for current prices for a trapdoor Civil War bayonet and scabbard I came across a seller that had both a dug bayonet and leather scabbard (two different holes) for sale. Since the scabbard was found in the ground, he soaked it in ethylene (Spelling) glycol to remove the moisture and stabilize it.
Anybody ever hear of this?

As long as I am talking about leather preservatives, I found some lanolin to try. Went to several pharmacys and asked about it. Since they rarely compound, they do not carry it. Did find a tube of 100% lanolin that (do not laugh) that nursing mothers use for a sore part of the breast!!

That's the same stuff I found, for nursing mothers. Used it on a pair of pig skin gloves to try it but It never seemed to soak in, kinda like using Vaseline.
I had to ask if an where they had it and sure enough the twenty something Coed walked me to the baby isle, found it,,,read the box and handed it to me and I read the box. I felt the need to blurt out something stupid like " This is good for leather work boots " Anything as long as she didn't think I had sore nipples.!!!

I have used nipple cream for years on ALL my leather items. The first thing to do is MAKE SURE it is 100% lanolin, some products have things like vitamin E, or aloe, mixed in. Second make sure you warm up the item and the cream, it makes application and absorption easier.
For those with M1
carbine, and other leather wrapped bayonets, this works GREAT on them as well. Don't forget other sports/work items like; straps on ski poles, boots, belts, anything made of leather!

It would be nice to know if that actually works. I have a couple of jugs of the old-style yellow/green anti-freeze in the garage (don't know, for sure, what's in the newer, different colored stuff), so I would be all set if I stumbled across an old, buried leather artifact.

Make certin it is Anhydrous not Hydrous lanolin. It is my understanding Hydrous wicks mousture. Any pharmacy can order 1lb jars of Anhydrous lanolin for very little $.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanolin I have had success using Anhydrous lanolin on old slings. holsters and leather knife handles. I would be careful with any lanolin product containing additives.

My lanolin tube says, HPA Lanolin. Soothes, heals and protects sore nipples. World's purest lanolin. Safe for Mom and baby. 100% natural. Preservative free. I guess it is alright.

The 1lb jars might be more economical. As stated before I have hade good success and have not seen any negitive comments on its use for the purposes discussed here. Let us know of your results.

Will do. Allready put it on some of my military leather holsters. The leather should be warm as mentioned before. Can use hair dryer...
