That is a very famous photo used in the Reader's Digest WWII book. I can't remember for sure but Guadalcanal comes to mind.

No difference in the stares between WWI & WWII in the war to end all wars WWI Chaos, Noise, Slaughter was epitomised by 19th century tactics meeting 20th century weapons things that come to mind Fromelles, 3 x Ypres, Vimy Ridge, Somme, Pozieres, Villers Bretanaux, Flanders, Cambrai, Jutland where 5000 british sailors perished the Somme 60,000 casualties in 1 day.
And in WWII all the island campaigns I for one as an Australianicon thank the USAicon as they were the only nation that I reckon could have sustained a war on 2 fronts the Pacific and the European theatre, Napolean failed and so did herr Hi***r with that concept.

    Tactics

"19th century tactics meeting 20th century weapons "

Man, you hit the nail on the head, Cinders. I can't believe the officers could get those guys to charge across open ground directly in the face of all those MGs. The attitude of the staffs was midieval -- the men were fodder to be used up as necessary.
Real men measure once and cut.
