SRS check and info on 1899 carbine purchase.
1899 Carbine #287841. I thought all it needed was a handguard. The stock has been sanded down to the point that the handguard would be too fat. That looks like it was done a very long time ago. The 1901 carbine sight was swapped out for a 1901 rifle sight. It has homemade sling swivels and sling. It has a rice peep sight. The bore looks good after cleaning but the muzzle is pretty worn so it might not group at all. Not sure was going on with the front sight blade, it looks like a full shark fin. Other than that...Its great
I would need a new stock, 1901 carbine sight, 1899 lower band. If I wanted it to shoot well, I would need a new barrel.

Nothing remotely close listed. Definitely a Bubba job. I don't have the words to describe that sling setup. Actually the front sight blade is the correct shape for a 1901C rear sight. It would need a C stamped on the side if it is Krag
. Unless you obtained as a gimme, restoration would be costly. John

Thank you. I couldn't see a C, but I'll look again.

The rear, rear sight screw is buggard up and the lock lever if frozen. I don't think the barrel has been cut but are crowns on carbines that flat?

Front sight might be around the proper height, but isn't the proper contour, likely homemade. Rear swivel looks to be whats left of the front swivel. Muzzles of the carbines weren't flat, so that's been worked on too. The CMP
sells new barrels, but the front sight stud has to be put on, and the mounting holes for the rear sight are a different thread. Quite a bit of sanding, I have a cutdown 92/96 that's been minimized, more so than yours.

Your are right about the barrel. It is 19 1/4" Not only did the cut the barrel, they moved the front sight back, I think? Hardly seems worth the effort. I wonder if this was re-barreled years ago with a cut sown rifle barrel?
A question about the rear 1901 sight. What are the effects of using a rifle rear sight. I know the graduations are different, but are they the same plane?

I measured wrong + I cant count. I measured with a rod to the breech and it is 22". But, someone did flatten the crown.

Well, the range markings on the leaf of the carbine sight were closer together which allowed more of them to be put on a leaf that is the same length for both. For this reason the carbine sight is graduated to 2300yds vs the 2000yds of the rifle sight. A rifle sight also has the slot that the slide rides in cut at an angle to automatically make correction for bullet drift caused by the spin of the projectile. For some reason the carbine didn't have that.

Thank you, I'll just keep the 1901 rifle sight. I don't have the wherewithal to fight eBay people for a carbine sight. How often are 2300yrd shots made with a Krag
carbine with open sights?
