In my Ugly Duckling posts last year part of the Swan transformation was the work with the stocks. In the case of KiloBravo's Winchester I put together a Shooting set from aftermarket Mahogany I purchased and set aside a collector set of Winchester wood.
My Inland had a stock that had suffered Bubba's sander. I repaired this stock as a shooter for the weapon and I also have a collector set set aside.
I enjoyed this work so I decided to take up rescuing stocks and hand guards from becoming firewood. I'm bringing them back to attractive plug-n-play shooters and in a some cases even collector value items.
My first project was a pair I picked up on eBay.
Neither of these stocks had been strangers to Bubba's sandpaper. The Potbelly was obviously a Birch Type 5 replacement stock but I had no idea what the other stock was until I cleaned all the crusted varnish of of it.
It turned out to be a Inland "OI" without any other marks. It had been through a professional rebuild previously judging from the repairs. I repaired the current issues and refinished the stock in a satin finish Tung Oil.
The Potbelly appears to be solid except for the sanding around the butt plate and on a scratch on the right front side. The only issue is the "DI" recoil plate has a blotchy finish and I was unable to remove it. Thought better to just leave it in place and not try to force it off.
I added matching hand guards, Potbelly has aftermarket and Inland "OI" hand guard. Metal was also added so they are Plug-n-Play. The Inland has all Inland components.
Since these two I have finished four other stock sets. These include a Underwood, Quality Hardware, Inland and Type 5 Kapur replacement stock. I have a Inland, Standard Products, Springfield Arsenal type 5 and three Winchesters in the pipeline. I'm hooked.Information
