    Question New Member from Indiana

Hi everyone thanks for allowing me to join you. I am a new gun owner and since I am a huge Military History buff I wanted to start my collection with an M1icon Carbine so I have been looking at all the sites and researching M1's which is how I came across your site.

Can I start right off with a question I am currently looking at a Winchester M1 Carbine with a serial number of 5829xxx does anyone know if this was a WWII Carbine?

I am anxious to start reading all of the threads so thanks.

    Bob

    When was it built

Thanks Charlie, I appreciate the website showing the M1icon Carbine serial numbers. Is there a site that also says when that serial number was built? Thanks

There are books. The "War Baby" series is the most informative. Though the three book set is costly. WB 3 shows a listing of the Winchester log entries.

Winchester log book entries show that your serial number was put on the receiver Nov 4, 1944. There was a time lag between the numbering and completing the carbine for acceptance.

All six and a half million US GI M1icon carbines were built between 1942 and 1945. Just make sure you buy a US GI carbine and not a commercial carbine.

You can find out here the prime contractors for military carbines as opposed to civilian patterns. It's all in the stickys at the beginning of the carbine forum. Or, buy Ruth's War Baby and War Baby Comes Home...you'll need them anyway.
    Regards, Jim
