A U.S. soldier north of the Volturno disables a mine, which has been discovered by the engineer holding his metal detector. “All roads lead to Rome,” quipped General Harold Alexander, the commander-in-chief of Allied forces in Italy, “but all the roads are mined.”

Interesting, two officers carrying rifles.

When I was an armorer, the officers were authorized M1 rifles as issue (there were no carbines)most supplied there own M1911A1 pistols. In the movie "Band of Brothers" the officers had M1 rifles

Yes, those who knew the score usually swapped their Carbines for the Garand when thier lives depended on it. Walt Ehlers, MOH in June 1944, was a squad leader and was given a Carbine but exchanged it when they got ashore on D-Day. He recently passed away, and I'm editing a testimonial article for the next GCA Journal that quotes him on that.

I think we see it all the time we just do not consider the subjects to be officers.

As I said...after I spent 35 years Infantry...I know that. You just don't see it much in pics. Though they still have their white bars on their helmets. Now, anybody else want to clarify it for me?

The officer with the mine detector is holding it for the guy digging out the mine (The guy with the M1903 rifle).
