A few months back I had the good fortune to meet a gentleman name Bill who served in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam as an officer in the Navy. After dinner one evening I showed him my firearm collection including my M1903A2. His eyes lit up and he said "I fired one of those in the war" and he suggested if he could shoot my 1903 he would bring his M1and let me shoot it ( something I had not yet had the opportunity to do ). The 03 was flawless, the M1 not so much. I promised to clean and lube it and bring it back. It doesn't look like its been cleaned in 30 or 40 years
and the action is full of sand and grit. All of that has been taken care of but the barrel looks like the proverbial sewer pipe. After running about 20 patches with #9 ( at first they came out black and kind of waxy ) now they are gray with a lovely hint of green. So, if you've managed to read this far ( sorry ) what is your favorite product for a really dirty bore. I have never run across anything this bad and Hoppe's #9 is not gonna' get it.
