Barrel date.

Guys I just picked up an M1 icon

that I won on GB. It's in better shape then I thought it was for an SA in the 1.1 million range. The barrel seems to have been changed but the only markings I can find on the barrel are 1-SA-1-4. I have never seen markings like this before. There is a punch mark and a P a bit further up the barrel. Does anyone have an idea what it is?

Post the drawing number with the revision number from the barrel, should be located under the rear handguard

Jim I looked with a magnifying glass and there are no other numbers. There is no drawing number on it. There is the number 3 on the barrel near the chamber but that is it. I have seen lots of Garand icon

barrels before and expected this one to be like the others with a date stamp and drawing number on it but this one is different from all the rest I have seen. I would assume that the barrel 1-S-A-1-4 is Springfield Armory made. Could the date be 1-4 for January 1944?

I sure wouldn't buy it as an original part right now. I don't suppose you could get a pic of this one? I know there's others that will be along shortly that don't need a pic, but if that's it for the number and there's no drawing number under the wood... Yes, S-A should be Springfield...

We have seen missing digits before, especially in the drawing number of late barrels. Human error.

So, it's just as he suspects for the date then? 1-44...I wondered if it might just be a dropped digit.

Ok I took of the top rear hand guard and found the following numbers. J35443 - 16 R 103. Does this make any sense as to when it was made? I doubt the barrel is original with the receiver dating to January 1943 if the web site is correct.

I have a data sheet from an original rifle: s/n 856914 barrel: side markings inverted S-A-9-42 top markings D35448-16-R 88B
