No4Mk2 Sight
I've had one of the "Irish Contract" rifles for a few years now but haven't really shot it much until lately. A couple of cases of the Greek ammo from CTD (
) has gotten my interest back up. After firing a couple hundred rounds I decided my 63 year old eyes need some help so I obtained a PH5C to assist there. Installation seems fairly straightforward, however, the original sight has that little pin securing the pivot screw. I did a bit of light tapping with a punch but it doesn't want to budge. Looking a little closer, it seems that the pin might be secured by a staking divot in the receiver, but my eyes may just be seeing things there. I haven't been able to find any detailed instructions on that. The only thing I've found so far is someone describing installation of the PH5C with words to the effect of " . . . you'll have to remove the pin securing the screw on the original sight . . . ". I don't want to go framming away on the pin and possibly peening it so that it'll never come out short of using a hacksaw or blowtorch. I may decide to just stick with the original sight. Any advise here? Thanks for any help.

That little pin may have the top end flattened a bit. If you go from the bottom it should tap out. There's really nothing to hold it in other than that.

You can always buy my P-H 8/53. No modification of the existing sight is required. 9MOA of windage in both directions. If not familiar with it I've provided some pics.
Also, see the article at the following link: Service and TArget Rifle Sights ~ Parker-Hale and B.S.A.
Send me a PM if interested or an email at keith.herrington@aol.com.

Thanks guys. First, I'll try a bit more on the pin.
Keith, I had originally looked at the info on the 8/53 but I just sort of skimmed over it and thought it was only designed for the .22 trainers. My bad. That probably would have been a better way to go.
BTW, I'm the one that bought your PH5C a couple of weeks ago. Small world.
I'll see what happens with what I've got right now for the time being.

Suirely, that little PIN, retaining, pin axis backsight is intended to be punched out from below as easy as pie on a No4 but a bit of a pig on the No5 because the bodies spread and step or shear it. Just punch it out! The replacements inevitably came from the carpenters shop in the form of a box of suitabl diameter small panel pins. Cut to length, smack one end to spread it, push in and tap in smacked end to hold it. Done about a zillion - as at lunchtime yesterday - and they last forever!

All my No4s have had the pin in question driven in from bottom - but there all ex range rifles at some stage in their lives and messed with a lot, so not "correct" in many ways. As with most my tools there homemade, I used a small jewellers screwdriver with tip ground flat, to drive out the pins. And yes, at least 2 of them appear to have been made from small panel pins/nails
