I find it surprising they sent one in that condition, not what you normally hear about CMP
.

I am surprised as well I have had nothing but excellent rifles from the few I have ordered from CMP
before. I was wondering is it because it is all CMP has left to work with?

I'll bet that's the very thing. You pay for special hand select(in some cases) and get a dandy until time passes...later you get hand select of what remains... Maybe that's what's left. Thing is, they have guidelines in print. I thought field was a bit better than that... here's what they say about that...
FIELD GRADE: (Fair to Good)
Field Grade Rifles. Most of these rifles have been refinished or rebuilt at least once while in military service and will likely have some parts from other manufacturers. Fair to good condition. Rifle wear will be exhibited by worn and mixed colors of the finish; there may be some minor pitting on the metal parts; wood will be basically sound but may be well used with minor hairline cracks, and many dings, scratches and gouges; wood may not match in color, type of wood or condition. These rifles may have some foreign parts and wood may be Walnut, Birch, Beech or other variety. Rifles do not have import marks. Bores will be generally good with only minor imperfections; the barrel crown may be nicked, and the muzzle may gauge more than “3” on muzzle gauge. The Throat Erosion will gauge less than 5 – well within US Army standards. Do not expect rifles in mint condition in this grade.
Manufacturer selection only guarantees the receiver was produced by the manufacturer listed. The barrel and the other parts may have been produced by other manufacturers

RGR all,
Tracking the description and have visited the CMP
South store a few times, so I know what to expect by grade and type. I was just surprised. Before I shoot this one I will really go over it, closer than usual, recheck the headspace and so forth, I mean it looks like it came out of a leaky storage barrel or crate, I will clean her up and get the rust and dirt off her and some TLC , see how she shoots, I have a really good IHC stock, great lock up, will remount it in, the one it came with is some after war refurb junk, I will strip it down, give a good cleaning, some elbow grease, it will work out.

Jim,
I have soaked the metal now and finished an initial cleaning. But I still think I can show you what I'm talking about. I shot pics of the buttplate, OP rod, barrel, front sight and the rifle as a whole. This is after a good cleaning and you can blow this up and still see a lot of corrosion minus the rust I removed last night. That is something I will work on later when able. The screws in the butt are rusted in so I'm trying to get out without destroying the stock. Take a look tell me what you think. I'm thinking more of a "Rack" grade than "Field" as she has been through the wringer, but more experienced folks out there can comment on that.

Still kind of hard to see but it does look more or less like their description in print...NRA fair to good... If the barrel turns out cleanish, it'll probably shoot fine. A bit of wear doesn't hurt. Besides, you can always get a refinish later and maybe a new barrel after a few thousand or so rounds downrange... I've sure seen worse.

My order was in March 11th. I ordered a non gapped with LMR barrel service grade and am pleased with mine. Maybe they got rid of the real good ones very quickly.
