Makes me want mine back now. I always preferred the wood stock to the fiberglass.

I prefer wood too but the plastic stock developed for the M14
was and still is the best stock ever issued with the weapon, (barring the modern McMillian, etc.). They had a terrible time with broken wood stocks in service. Especially in the Army Airborne There was still a huge pile of broken M14 wood in the scrap heap at Fort Bragg when I was there in the early 1980's.

Yes, I do like the feel of it and am aware it eliminates the problems of warping and such. Walnut just looks good and I'm not going to exit an aircraft ever again...I hope. Body would never handle it...

General Tire&Rubber fiberglass M14 stocks
Promo, you have the early variation of the plastic stock on your M14
. These are not that common (when your looking for one). The second variation has the checkering on the pistol grip and forearm. The first plastic stocks that I saw on M14 rifles was in Feb '64, and they were the first variation on TRW rifles.
I have never seen a Winchester M14 barrel dated before 1961Attachment 62560Attachment 62561

I think the fibreglass stock has the checkering, would need to check. It might be a problem in heavy useage on the field, but when only at the shooting range I hope it won't make any problem. The pictures show the wooden stock. And the serial is slightly above 1.xxx.xxx. And Bill, yes of course it is working!
