1917 Barrel Markings
Hi,
I have a Remington (receiver) M1917 with some barrel markings I don't understand. On the bottom of the barrel just ahead of the receiver, there are the letters "GG" beneath which is the number "298." Can anyone tell me what they mean? I can't find reference to "GG" anyplace I've looked.
Thanks for your help,
Mike

Sounds like an inspectors stamp.

298 would be a Remington Barrel inspector stamp number.
My bare barreled action has a V (c maybe) and 283 which is not listed as an inspection number but its clear enough.
It may be that they did use inspector stamps for that part. New one to me though the numbers are not. Usually number with an Eagle or alone.
Maybe due to the critical nature of the barrel more tracking.

Chuck: can you explain gallery markings? Not familiar with the term.

thats what Remington calls them... inspector markings, or subinspector.. could be the person who checked fitment of the barrel, sight.. or targeted the rifle...
