how to identfy a No. 1 sear from a No.4 sear.
I have a number of loose sears . I need a No. 1 to salvage a No.1 Mk V barrel receiver. and don't know how to tell the one from another.

Sears for No 4 and 5 rifles are flat sided - have the same width right through on both arms of the sear, and have flats milled on both faces of the long arm of the sear.
SMLE sears have a stepped increase in width towards the extreme ends of both arms, and do not have the flats on top and bottom faces of the long arm.
Thickness across sear at pivot point - No 4 .248"

Thank you fro your response. Turns out all the sears I have are for the NO.4 . Went to a small local show Saturday and found a SMLE sear.
Now if I may ask how to tell the difference between magazine catches.

SMLE catches are smooth, with a slightly curved "tail" to the part which protrudes into the trigger guard.
No 4 catches have grooves cut across the part inside the trigger guard. This end is straight.

Thank you again, the catch I have is for a SMLE. Now to find out why the bolt will not cock when installed in a new Enfield made forearm. work fine when not in the forearm.

Most forends require careful shaping and finishing to fit properly.
Possibly your sear is binding in its slot, which will prevent it from catching the cocking piece. The walls of the sear slot can touch the sear if the forend is not parallel with the action/barrel, or if the receiver is sat slightly to one side or the other.
