I have a bayonet which is stumping me at the mo I think its a M1895 from Hungary the blade is stamped FG over GY, all good so far. however if you have the blade pointing left so the ring is on top , on the pomel the stud should be facing you. On mine its not. the grips seem to have the screws the wrong way around as well as the stud. I cant find a bayonet to match this one. The tang seems to be ok. I hope someone will point me in the right way!.......paul.

I think the bayo ring is too low for a M-95. Czeck CZ-24?

Hooked on history... thanks for your answer, I have looked at the vz-23 and the vz-24 the closest is the 23 as everything is pointing the right way! However the blade length is right at 384mm the ring dia is also right at 15.02mm which would fit the 8mm mauser,but the overall length is not right as mine is 378mm and it should be 384mm. So I now wonder if it has been modified by the Germans and used in WWII. How do I explain FG over GY on the blade? ....paul

It is a reused M95 blade which appears to be fitted to a M98 handle. Another nation I would take a look at would be Yugoslavia as they did have tons of M95s captured/acquired and adopted M98 Mauser actions. Maybe sending a email to Otto at ebayonet.com he might be able to positively identify it for you.

You may find your answer on the excellent worldbayonet website and there are not many bayonets with the blade "upside down" as in this example. You should be able to find it in the country pages or failing that there is also a page which gives you a clue to the bayonet's identity from it's length. I think that I may have a similar bayonet in my collection but I'm not 100% sure on the identity. I think that I would check out the Austria pages first on the world bayonet website.

These turn up periodically. Probably a Turkish marriage of a M1895 blade and VZ-24 hilt for use with the Czech 98/22 Mausers Turkey obtained. Look for evidence of a weld where they joined the blade and hilt. The Yugoslavians typically did better work, which is why Turkey comes to mind when I see these.

Yes its was assigned to Turkey, remade using Hungarian blade, the crossguard Turkish and the pommel and scabbard are Czech. makes me wonder if the time, cost and effort make it worth it!.........paul.
