Interesting that they'd use Johnston's magazine design.

There is a Johnson Mag Garand at S.A.N.H.S but this one is a Sanford Integral Magazine

Another side loading integral magazine was tested, a derivative of Melvin Johnson’s rotary magazine. This was built by Olin Industries in 1952/53 and was tested in April 1954. It was reported that converting existing M1
Garands to use the rotary magazine would have been “exceedingly difficult and probably impractical.”

I'll hazard a guess here. Seeing the 1954 date on the picture, I would say it was successful but too late to the party when detachable magazines were coming into vogue.

T65 Cartridge
IIRC the T65 was designated 7.62mm -- by the E3 it was about finalized.
