M5 bayonet and M1 Garand

Years ago I owned an M1 icon

rifle and an M5 bayonet. The bayonet never did fit on the M1. I figured the bayonet was defective since the stud did not fit into the slot on the gas cylinder lock screw. I ended up giving the bayonet to a friend and selling the M1 years later.

Last night while perusing one of my M1 books, I noticed that a side by side photo of the "poppet" lock screw and "single slot" lock screw had different diameter holes where the bayonet stud would fit. My rifle had the "single slot" lock screw.

Can anyone confirm that M5 will not fit in the early "single slot" lock screw?

The Garand originally took a conventional type bayonet the 1905/M1 icon

with a T slot and muzzle ring, the new M5 bayonet changed the mount and I would assume the end of the rifle was modified to take the new bayonet

Like Carl eludes to the gas cylinder lock screw wouldn't take the spigot type fit of the M5. You needed the new type gas cylinder lock screw relief valve, as per grenade launching. Remember, when the M5 came in all rifles had long since been converted to those.

That sucks! I gave away a perfectly good M5, and it looked new and unused. Why couldn't you guys told me this back in the 70s.

I had one come to me in 1976 from an old Snr NCO that had traded or stolen it from a US troop in Germany icon

back in the '60s. I didn't know either then...

An original real USGI WW-II single slot gas cylinder screw has a center hole that measures approx. 0.240 to 0.245.
The later cross shaped poppet valve gas cylinder screw has a center hole that measures approx. 0.280 to 0.285.
The M5 stud measure .280 [approx.] dia
