Armory rack

My buddy called me to his house because he had "something" for me to pick up. When i get there i find an aluminum M16A1 rifle rack. The kind they used to hold 10 rifles in and also used them to transport the rifles in. How cool is that! Now i need to build 9 more rifles to fill the thing.
I never saw one in the wild before. How rare are these and is there a $ value on them?

Those aluminum M16 racks are around, anywhere from $60 to $150 per rack depending on condition. It is better to find one local without having to pay the shipping

I'm not sure about that part though...I think just storage when they came to ground.

As late as 1990, i remember having our unit arrive in a training area where supply and advanced party were well ahead of us. Weapons were issued from supply tentright out of those racks. After the training was over they were turned back in and resecured in the racks.
But then there were also times we drew weapons right out of our unit arms room before departing and kept them until we returned.
Another weird thing, we had A1 rifles even in the mid 90s. We also had 1911A1 pistols and M60s. Radios were Prick 77s. We were a bit behind the times i guess.

To my dismay, the M16 rack will only M16 and M16A1 rifles. Commercial models don't fit. Ambidextrous safety levers won't go in as well. Modifications would damage the rubber coatings on the pockets, the rifles rotate into. Does anybody have suggestions?

Yes. I think only A1 and A2 rifles fit. I figure once i fill it with A2 rifles, it would make a nice conversation piece.

The same racks are in use today, (M12 series rack). Nowadays they are modified to fit, first the M4 carbine and now are being modified for the ambi, M4 carbines. Kind of strange that the nomenclature is the M12 rack, instead of perhaps the M16 rack, but that is the military. The modification is a simple angle iron welded to the back of the rack's handguard rest to prevent the M4 from being removed while locked. For the M4A1, they simply bend the handguard rests to accept the different width. These racks are often for sale at the DRMO sales. Usually bought for scrap.
